The practice of collaborative teaching has gained great significance as a human resource
development practice in the higher education but there is little empirical evidence on the impact
of collaborative teaching on student learning outcomes. The problem of collaborative teaching
and the effect it has on student achievement is a burning one since schools are seeking to
optimize educational performance by developing strategic faculty development initiatives. The
paper has addressed the ways in which collaborative teaching must be employed as a human
resource development methodology of enhancing student learning in tertiary institutions of
learning. The collaborative teaching strategy that should be embraced by the institutions that
intend to achieve their utmost potential of student learning should not just be centered on the
utilization of the teaching strategy but also its effective incorporation into the desirable
organizational conditions. Schools and colleges need to establish cultures of collaboration
through leadership and policy support, schedule redesign to support collaboration, recognition
and rewards systems that reward collaborative work, holistic professional development, and
professional learning communities that place a premium on collaborative practice.
Longitudinal designs, discipline variations, test individual collaborative models, mediate by
mechanisms and use more extensive student perspectives should be used in future research.
